Volunteering

Participate in sea turtle protection and conservation efforts, such as night patrols and hatchling releases, with aminimum stay of one week at the Mayto Tortuguero Camp. Learn about the subprojects of the Mayto Environmental Education Center, such as composting, organic gardens, mangrove reforestation, etc. Also enjoy hiking activities in the region, snorkeling on nearby beaches, an open sea excursion, and the most beautiful sunsets!

You can participate during the summer (June - August) or winter (December and January) program.

The minimum stay is one week and participants may choose any of the following dates:

Activities to do during your stay:

Night Patrols

Surveillance brigades along the 13 km of Mayto beach in search of sea turtle nests. The eggs are collected and relocated to incubation pens for monitoring until hatching.

Incubation Pen Monitoring

During the protection of the nests within the incubation pens, constant surveillance is necessary; including humidity and temperature control to ensure the success of incubation and subsequently the hatching of the offspring.
Each nest must be tagged, recorded and protected until the turtles hatch.

Release of hatchlings

Those turtles that are in a position to be released will be counted and transported to the beach (in front of the waves) for entry into the sea.

Hiking on nearby beaches

Some natural attractions of the region will be visited, including nearby beaches with reefs for snorkeling and hiking activities, while addressing environmental conservation issues in general.

Environmental Education Workshops

Volunteers will receive initial training on sea turtles and their management at the camp, including biological topics such as life cycle, threats and conservation work. As well as generalities of the research projects in the camp.

Open sea excursion

Scientific activity in which turtles will be observed in their natural habitat through a boat tour on the outskirts of Tehuamixtle Bay. Volunteers will be able to observe how a turtle registration and marking process is carried out for the different research work carried out at the Camp. The tour ends with a space to snorkel at points of interest within the bay.

Mayto Environmental Education Center (CEAM)

The volunteers will participate in the maintenance work of the CEAM, as well as in workshops on the different subprojects that are carried out, such as plastic recycling, growing vegetables to support the camp, reforestation of the mangrove ecosystem, cultivation of important wood species of the region, and composting.

Social work

During their stay at the camp, volunteers will participate in cleaning campaigns on nearby beaches, as well as towns and roads to reduce the impact of plastic pollution.

Maintenance of the installations

Volunteers will assist in maintenance activities at the camp facilities.

The fee of $3,000 MX pesos per volunteer per week.

The program is intended for young people of legal age (+18) with the availability to participate for one week.

Cancellation policy
If you are unable to participate in the Volunteering once the advance payment has been made: 1) we will try to reschedule your participation in another available week, or 2) you can recommend someone you know to take your place.
If this is the case, please notify us at least a week in advance to make the change valid.
